The government will grant compensation to 17 patients who developed complications after undergoing cataract surgeries at the Nuwara Eliya District Hospital. Cabinet yesterday approved a proposal to this effect.
In February last year, the previous Cabinet had approved a proposal to set up a technical committee to decide on the amount of compensation that should be granted to the patients. A technical committee headed by an Additional Secretary to the was thus established This committee then conducted a study of the matter and submitted their recommendations on the compensation that should be granted, Health Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa told the Cabinet media briefing today.
As per the recommendations of the technical committee, compensation ranging from Rs. 250, 000 to Rs. 1 million are to be granted to 17 patients who suffered complications.
Accordingly, Rs. 1 million will be granted to 12 patients, Rs. 750, 000 for two patients, Rs. 700, 000 for one patient and Rs. 250, 000 for two patients, Dr. Jayatissa said.
