Families of eight Sri Lankan fishermen arrested after venturing into the Indian maritime border today demanded that they be released.
The families claimed that no action was being taken against the Indian fishermen who enter the Sri Lankan waters and called for the early release of the eight men.
The Navy explained that four dinghy boats used by the fishermen were also taken into custody by the Indians.
The fishermen who were arrested by the Indian cost conservation were identified as H Jeewantha, A.A.R.R Fernando, Sylvester Cruse, V.G Rangakumar, and V.S.M Fernando, V.A.A Jude Malson Fernando, K.K.W Fernando and A.A.R Fernando.
The Indian coast protection force have also arrested Sri Lankan Fishermen during previous years for trespassing their maritime boundary. However the fishermen at Kalpitiya complained that the Indian fishermen also trespass into Sri Lanka and illegally carry out fishing.
They added that when the Sri Lanka navy apprehends Indian fishermen the Indians too apprehend Sri Lankan fishermen.
