A farmer was injured after being attacked by a bear in Mullaitivu last evening. Police said two farmers had been on their way to a paddy field in Mannankandal, Puthukkudiyirippu when a bear had suddenly emerged out of the jungle and attacked one of them.
As one of the farmers was being attacked, the other had struck the bear and managed to chase it off. He had then admitted his friend to the Puthukkudiyirippu Hospital. The injured farmer was later transferred to the Mulliaitivu Hospital for further treatment.
Hospital authorities stated that the farmer had suffered injuries to one of his hands and legs. One finger on the hand has been broken in the attack. However, the farmer's condition is not serious.
Farmers in the area are fearful of venturing out to their paddyfields following the attack. Police said they have notified the Mullaitivu wildlife office of the incident.
