Fifty-four Sri Lankan workers awaiting their repatriation from Kuwait due to various issues including overstaying their visas returned to the country today morning, officials at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) said.
Some of the workers had fled their original workplaces while some had faced health issues and exceeded the age limit for employment.
Sri Lanka’s Embassy in Kuwait assisted in the repatriation process and made arrangements to get police and judicial clearance for their repatriation.
The majority of the workers were from the Anuradhapura district while the others were from Polonnaruwa, Monaragala, Galle and Matara.
Only one male worker was among the returnees while the others had sought employment as housemaids.
The Foreign Employment Bureau made arrangements to pay a travel allowance for the workers to get back home.
