The first consignment of 1485 Metric Tonnes (MT) salt, imported from India reached Colombo today, according to senior officials attached to the Sri Lanka Customs.
This is the first time the country decided to import salt after a fifteen-year gap to meet the local demand after local production in saltern factories was affected due to bad weather conditions prevailing in the country.
Recently, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to import 30,000 MT of salt into the country to resolve the local market demand.
The importation of salt is to continue till February 28, according to senior Customs officials.
