Five persons were arrested at the departure terminal of the Bandaranaike International Airport today while attempting to smuggle gold.
They were arrested while boarding the plane to leave for Chennai, India in the afternoon.
Customs officials seized 23 capsules of gold in gel form bundled in ten packages that were in the possession of the suspects', the Customs said.
The total stock of gold weighed 8.6 kg and is estimated to be valued at Rs.164 million.
The arrested persons were identified as businessmen residing in the Negombo area.
