Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the break-in and robbery that occurred at the Indian Visa Center in Colombo.
The robbery had occurred between 5.00pm on February 14 and 6.00am on February 15, Police Spokesman Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Nihal Thalduwa said.
Four male suspects and a female suspect were taken into custody today (21) following an investigation conducted under the supervision of SSP Colombo South.
Two suspects aged 53 years of age were arrested from Wellawatta. A 49-year-old suspect was arrested from Kirulapone while a 54-year-old suspect was taken into custody from Thimbirigasyaya. Police also arrested a 63-year-old female from Grandpass in connection with the incident. The female suspect had served as a cleaner employed by a private company contracted for cleaning services at the Visa Center, the SSP revealed. Investigations conducted thus far have revealed that she had supplied information to the others to carry out the break-in and robbery.
Police have recovered a laptop, a DVR, a camera and an iPad that were stolen from the Visa Center. Investigations so far have unearthed that the suspects had broken into the building over information that there was a safe inside that contained cash, police said.
Further investigations are being conducted to ascertain if other suspects were also involved in the robbery, the Police Spokesman added.
