Five suspects who tried to smuggle foreign currency amounting to Rs. 42 million to Dubai were arrested by Customs officers at the Bandaranaike International Airport this morning (20), Customs Media Spokesman, Deputy Customs Superintendent (Legal Affairs) Sudantha Silva said.
The five suspects are three females and two males. All are resident in Colombo.
They were trying to board a flight to Dubai scheduled to leave at 2.30am today when Customs officers subjected them to a thorough search on suspcision. During the search, officers were able to recover the foreign currency hidden inside their traveling bags.
The seized foreign currency includes 22, 300 US Dollars, 63, 500 Euros, 292, 000 Saudi Riyals, 8725 Sterling Pounds and 75, 000 Dirams.
Further investigations are ongoing.
