A 5000 strong Police force will be deployed for the Esala Perahera in Kandy in August, police said.
With the expectations that the large numbers will arrive to witness the Perahera this season the additional Police is due to be deployed.
Attendance at the annual event has been affected due to different reasons in the past four years.
In 2019 the attendance dropped due to the Easter Sunday attacks that year and in the next two years participation reduced due to the COVID19 situation. Last year too the attendance dropped due to protests and the fuel crisis that followed.
The Esala Perahera preahera preparations start with the Kap Situvima on August 16. The Kumbal Perahera is due to start on August 21 and the first Randoli Perahera on August 26. The final Randoli Perahera is on August 30 followed by the Day Perahera on the following day.
