Five suspects who were allegedly digging for treasure at an archaeological site in Vaddakkachchi, Dharmapuram have been taken into police custody along with a car and a high powered scanner.
Dharmapuram police arrested the suspects during a raid following a tip-off that a suspicious car was parked at an archaeological site in Vaddakkachchi on Tuesday.
The arrested suspects are residents of Kalutara, Hambantota, Welimada and Mahiyanganaya. Police said the group had been scouting various locations in the area for treasure with the aim of coming to dig them up later.
The suspects were produced before the Kilinochchi Magistrate, whereupon they were remanded in custody till April 6.
