Foreign policy anchored in economic diplomacy, says Foreign Minister

News

“Sri Lanka’s foreign policy is firmly anchored in economic diplomacy, with a strong focus on trade, investment, tourism promotion, and innovation,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Vijitha Herath said, addressing the Chamber Of Lankan Entrepreneurs (COYLE) Diplomats’ Evening 2026.

Held on Thursday (February 5), he also highlighted the role of Sri Lanka’s diplomatic missions abroad, saying they must play an active part in advancing national economic interests.

“I emphasised the role of Sri Lanka’s diplomatic missions in actively promoting exports, attracting foreign direct investment, supporting tourism, and facilitating technology and knowledge transfer, underscoring the need for diplomacy and enterprise to work hand in hand” the Minister posted on social media.

Drawing attention to Sri Lanka’s structural strengths, Mr. Herath noted the island’s “strategic location along major international shipping routes,” its “skilled workforce and improving infrastructure” as key advantages in engaging global partners and investors.

He also reaffirmed the Government’s reform agenda, reiterating its commitment to measures “aimed at enhancing transparency, ease of doing business, investor confidence, and long-term economic resilience.”
