A former member of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has been arrested by the Special Task Force (STF) for allegedly possessing a vehicle that had been assembled illegally.
The raid was conducted on the residence of the suspect at Colombo 13 yesterday based on information received by the STF intelligence unit. The information indicated that there was a vehicle at the location that had been assembled locally using parts that had been smuggled in illegally violating Customs and other laws, Police Spokesman Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Ajith Rohana stated.
STF personnel found that the owner of the vehicle did not have any documents to prove legal ownership of the vehicle or a certificate of registration. Accordingly, the 56-year-old former CMC councilor was taken into custody and handed over to the foreshore police along with the vehicle for further investigations.
The Foreshore Police and STF are conducting joint investigations into the incident. The suspect is due to be produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate's Court.
