Former MP Uddika Premaratna who resigned from Parliament is likely to seek political asylum in Canada, sources said.
He had and his family members had left to Dubai in December and was due to travel to Canada. He had used his Diplomatic passport for travel.
On September 18, last year unidentified persons fired at the MP's vehicle, but Police could not identify the persons responsible for the attack.
The shooting was believed to be a staged attack to support the asylum application .
