Forty-nine inmates were released today to mark the Independence Day.
Among those released were two Indian fishermen held at the Welikada Prison.
The Department of Prisons stated that the pardon is granted under Article 34 of the Constitution.
In addition, a pardon of one week for every year (or part thereof) of the sentence already served by prisoners currently undergoing imprisonment was granted, along with the cancellation of the remaining sentence for prisoners serving time solely due to the non-payment of fines amounting to Rs. 75,000 or less.
Under this special presidential pardon, 49 inmates have qualified for release.

The United States has told Sri Lanka that the disposition of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr and its crew is a matter for Colombo to resolve under its own laws and international obligations, while signalling it is in active talks with Sri Lanka to contain Iran’s threat to US interests.
The government today granted permission for an Iranian warship with 208 on board to enter the country.
