News

Forty-nine inmates were released today to mark the Independence Day.

Among those released were two Indian fishermen held at the Welikada Prison.

The Department of Prisons stated that the pardon is granted under Article 34 of the Constitution.

In addition, a pardon of one week for every year (or part thereof) of the sentence already served by prisoners currently undergoing imprisonment was granted, along with the cancellation of the remaining sentence for prisoners serving time solely due to the non-payment of fines amounting to Rs. 75,000 or less.

Under this special presidential pardon, 49 inmates have qualified for release.
