Four suspects who were allegedly engaged in clearing a section of the Thabbowa Forest Reserve were taken into custody today (25) by officers from the Karuwalagaswewa Wildlife Range Office.
A mini backhoe, a tractor and two motorbikes used by the suspects were also taken into custody.
Wildlife officers undertook the raid with assistance from the Puttalam Special Task Force Camp.
At the time of the raid, the suspects had cleared about some five acres inside the forest reserve. The suspects were clearing the area for cultivation, according to wildlife officers.
Investigations are underway to arrest several more suspects who were allegedly involved in the destruction.
