The cabinet has decided to hold the G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) examination in December and the Ordinary Level (O/L) examination in August in the future.
The change is to enable students to obtain the first degree qualifications within a minimum time frame by minimising the time spent for selection for the state universities.
The cabinet note said due to extended period spent for issuance of examination results for O/L and inauguration of A/L classes as well as the time spent for the selection of students for the state universities, the ages of students when they complete school education and complete the University Education are 19-20 and 25-26 years respectively.
The note said structural inconsistencies in these examination systems and the unnecessary administrative delays related to technical procedures have led to unnecessary delays in entering the employment market after completing the higher education.
Accordingly, approval was given for restructuring grades 10 and 11 to be only one year and nine months.
A decision was also taken to issue results in three months.
