’’Gilanopasthana’’ programme by Matara Journalists to support veteran journos

News

The first phase of the "Gilanopasthana" (Caring for the Ailing) programme organised by the Matara Journalists' Association was held last Friday (3). The programme is being held as part of the "10 for 10" initiative organised to mark the 10th anniversary of the Matara Journalists' Association in 2025.

Under this welfare project, the association aims to support its senior members—veteran journalists from the Matara district who once dedicated their time and effort to being the voice of the voiceless through their pens and cameras. Due to old age and various health conditions, these seasoned professionals are currently confined to their homes. The programme was designed to visit them, inquire after their wellbeing, and provide a sense of joy and mental rejuvenation through entertainment.

In this inaugural phase, a delegation from the Matara Journalists' Association visited the residences of three veteran journalists living in the Dickwella area - Mr Sirisena Galappatti, Mr Cecil Ruwanara, and Mr N.T.K. Janakananda.
