The cabinet has given go ahead to implement a project to sustainably upgrade small bridges owned by local government authorities.
The Ministry of Public Administration provincial councils and Local Government has conducted an assessment of rural access infrastructure in collaboration with the Local Government Institutions based on proposals made by the provincial councils regarding the upgrading of small bridges.
According to the assessment it had been identified that huge number of small bridges in rural villages are dilapidated, narrow, unsecured or in destroyed conditions. As a result the villagers including farmers, women as well as children are experiencing difficulties in traversing through bridges which remain in bad state, while facing safety risk every time they use the bridges, the cabinet was informed.
Therefore the proposal to implement the project to upgrade the small bridges during the period from 2026 to 2029 at a total estimated cost of Rs 6,793.03 million for improvement of 880 bridges that are within 229 local government institution in 25 districts on an island wide priority basis was approved by the cabinet Ministers.
The Proposal was submitted by Minister of Public administration, Provincial councils, A.H.M.H. Abayarathna submitted the proposal.
