Dr. Maiya Gunasekara has been named the new chairman of the 15-member National Sports Council by Minister of Sports Harin Fernando, replacing its former Chairman Arjuna Ranatunga.
The following will make up the new National Sports Council: Dr. Maiya Gunasekara – Chairman, Mr. I.U. Wickramasuriya – Secretary, Mrs. Sriyani Kulawansa, Major General (Retd) Rajitha Ampemohotti, Prof. Arjuna de Silva, Mr. Panduka Keerthinada, Mr. Ana G. G. Punchihewa, Mr. Malik Kader, Dr. S.V.D. Nanayakkara, Mr. Hafeez Marso, Mr. Sidath Wettimuny, General (Retd) Jagath Jayasuriya, Mrs. Anuradha Illeperuma, Prof. Shemal Fernando, and Kamal Deshapriya.
The National Sports Selection Committee has also been appointed by the Sports Minister Fernando that consists of, General Shavendra Silva – Chairman, Mr. Arjun Rishaya Fernando – Secretary, Dr. Maiya Gunasekara, Mr. Suresh Subramaniyam, and Mr. Nalinda Sampath Ilangakoon.

An exhibition badminton match between Sri Lanka’s youngest Olympian shuttler, Viren Nettasinghe, and Anders Antonsen, the World No.2 ranked in Men’s Singles, will take place at the Mercantile Badminton Association (MBA) Courts at Malalasekara Mawatha, Colombo 7 on Friday (13).
In a major detection at the Ceylon Shipping Lines (CSL) warehouse in Colombo 09, Sri Lanka Customs officers uncovered a large consignment of contraband cigarettes and whisky concealed within a shipment declared as household furniture and personal goods.
