Hiking was one of the hobbies of 27 year old Virashmi Kodithuwakku of Elpiitiya and died while on one of those expeditions with her colleagues after falling off the Uthuwankanda mountain in Mawanella earlier in the day.
She was among some 60 who undertook the trip to Uthuwankanda better known as the Saradial rock.
One of her colleagues explaining the incident said Virashmi had been reluctant to climb the mountain using a rope and had taken a more difficult route. “She slipped and fell off the mountain”, he said.
Virashmi a former student of Ananda Central College Elpitiya had passed out from the Agriculture Faculty of the Peradeniya University had done several other expeditions and the climb to the Bathalegala rock was one of them.
She had worked as course Coordinator at Post Graduate Institute of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya while doing her post graduate studies.
Tributes poured in last night from her colleagues. One of them by Subodhi Gamage posted on Facebook said ; “Nangi, you had this risk free life and you enjoyed every bit of it by exploring the nature you loved the most. Never thought that same nature would go against you to take your young life.
Im shaking right now to write this, can’t believe you left everyone this soon. May you attain supreme bliss of Nirwan.”
