The southern province special operations unit of the excise department have yesterday detected a large scale illicit distillery operated within a reserve situated within Kamburupitiya Walpita area.
The Commissioner Excise (Legal enforcement) Kapila Kumarasinghe said that they were able to seize 22,580 liters of illicit liquor and nab the 38year old suspect who was illegally brewing illicit liquor in the middle of the densely forested area.
Mr Kumarasinghe said that they were also taken custody over the barrels and metal coils and equipment used for illicit liquor brewing. He said that the equipment used to brew liquor worth over Rs 500,000.
The officials involved in the raid have located the distillery while carrying out a surveillance operation following a tip off made by the general public.
The suspect was released under the excise department bail, yet the departments have planned to take legal action against him on March 24.
