A consignment of 30 train compartment that were ordered under the programme to purchase 160 train compartments from India arrived on Sunday at the Colombo Port.
The agreement, which was signed before the COVID-19 pandemic, will see the train compartments, produced by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, delivered to the country in batches.
The 30 compartments that have now been delivered are worth about USD 14.7 million, Sri Lanka Railways' (SLR) Deputy General Manager (Procurement) Asela Pathirathna said.
Ten train compartments that were manufactured under the agreement were delivered earlier and this week's consignment takes the total number of compartments delivered to 40, meaning a further 120 compartments are to be delivered in the future.
The compartments include 13 third class coaches, eight second class coaches, three air-conditioned first class coaches and a postal coach.
The newly delivered train compartments are to be added to trains plying the low country and coastal lines, the SLR stated.
