The Galle Heritage Foundation organised a cleanup of the Galle Fort ramparts today. A large number of foreign volunteers also took part in the cleanup programme through the involvement of a Non Governmental Organisation.
Since the lifing of travel restrictions, a large number of visitors have descended on the Galle Fort and many simply throw away their litter on the ramparts, resulting in a large amount of litter, including polythene, collecting in the area, the Foundation stated.
As the Fort is a world heritage site, the Galle Heritage Foundation requests local and foreign tourists to take steps to ensure that they either collect their litter and take it with them or dispose of it properly.
It also said that such cleanup projects are organised for the Fort on a monthly basis and any volunteers are welcome to take part.
