The scarcity of diesel has been the biggest problem over the past few days, with many filling stations running out of stocks. Vehicle lines up to a mile long have been observed in some filling stations as motorists waited hours for fuel stocks to arrive.
In places such as Anamaduwa, Puttalam, police had to be called in to some filling stations to maintain order as tempers flared between those waiting for diesel stocks.
In Dambulla, vehicles carrying local and foreign tourists and pilgrims had come to a standstill in some places due to lack of fuel.
