The Inter Company Employees' Union (ICEU) held a protest opposite the Labour Department in Colombo today demanding that the Government withdraw provisions in the Surcharge Tax Bill to impose a 25% levy from the Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) and Employees Trust Fund (ETF).
Labour Minister Nimal Siripala De Silva, who has publicly opposed the levy, also visited the location where the protest was being held and met with protesters led by ICEU Convenor and former MP Wasantha Samarasinghe.
The minister said he was on the side of the workers and would take the concerns expressed by the unions to Cabinet.
