The annual Kandy Esala procession commenced yesterday with the first Kumbal Perahera. The first of the five Kumbal processions began parading from the Sri Dalada Maligawa at 7.10 p.m.
The Diywadana Nilame Pradeep Nilanga Dela led the Procession. The processions of the four main devales of Kandy Natha, Vishnu, Katagama and Pattini followed the Dalada Maligawa Perahera.
The iconic tusker “Indi-Raja" led the procession along with Myan Raja and "Kamdula " ( from Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara). The five Kumbal Peraheras will be followed by the five Randoli Peraheras from August 26, to continue till 30.
The tusker “Indi Raja” was a gift from the people of India to Sri Dalada Malgawa. It was handed over by the former controversial Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka J.N. Dixit who was stationed here during the later years of the 1980s.
