Parliament adjourned till tomorrow amid protests by opposition

News

Parliament was adjourned till 9.30am tomorrow (19) a short while ago by Deputy Speaker Rizvi Sally after Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Ajith P. Perera, who was supposed to be present in the House to move the adjournment debate on the Iran-Israel conflict, was not present to commence the debate.

The opposition requested for an adjournment debate on the escalating conflict between Iran and Israeli this morning and the government and opposition had both agreed to hold an adjournment debate on the motion this evening.

However, when the adjournment debate was taken up, it was SJB MP Nizam Kariapper who rose to speak. This drew protests from the government, with Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath and Leader of the House Bimal Rathnayake both stating that the adjournment motion must be moved by the MP who submitted it. They argued such a motion could not be moved by another MP on behalf of the one who submitted it.

Amid vocal protests by the opposition, Deputy Speaker Sally adjourned the House till tomorrow noting that SJB MP Ajith P. Perera, who had submitted the adjournment motion, was not present in the House to move the motion.
