In Pixs: Political parties mark May Day with low key events

News

Political parties and trade unions marked the traditional May Day celebrations today by drawing significant crowds across the country. Many political parties organized low key events rather than major rallies or processions considering the current economic crisis the country is going through currently.

The United National party (UNP) May Day celebrations were held at Sugathadasa indoor stadium where President Ranil Wickremesinghe addressed the event via zoom technology.

The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) held its only May Day meeting at Campbell Park Borella without any processions under theme of “Abiyoga binda Abilasaha Jayagamau” (break through obstacles and win aspirations). The MahaJana Eksath Permauna (MEP) and several other parties would be taking part in the meeting.

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, ex Minister Basil Rajapaksa and Cabinet Ministers and State Ministers from the party also took part in the event.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) held a limited procession from P.D. Sirisena grounds in Maligawatte to A.E. Gunasinghe grounds in Pettah.

The National People's Power (NPP) backed by the JVP marked May Day celebrations at Viharamahadevi Park at 4.00 pm. Their May Day March commenced from BRC grounds at 2.00pm and proceeded towards ViharaMahadevi Park.

The Freedom People’s Congress (FPC) organized its inaugural May Day celebrations at Kandy under the theme freedom for all while Ceylon Workers Congress marked the day with seperate events in various estates since the party earlier decided not to have a massive May Day rally.
