A large group of protestors gathered in front of the Colombo Fort railway station today(18) against the recent killing of wild elephants.
Protestors demanded authorities to protect wild elephant paths and habitat and to strengthen laws against the use of cruel methods to kill elephants.
The protestors charged that human-elephant conflict has intensified recently with incidents reported in eight provinces, 19 districts and 131 divisional secretariat divisions.
They urged authorities to ban the use of jaw exploding traps (hakka patas) among villagers as it has killed 651 wild elephants in recent times.
