Responding to an arrest of 54 Indian fishermen last night by the Navy for engaging in fishing in Lankan territorial waters, India reiterated that the fishermen related issues should be dealt in a humanitarian manner.
“We reiterate that issues associated with Indian fishermen are to be dealt in a humanitarian manner,” a statement from the High Commission said.
Providing immediate consular access and emergency supplies to apprehended fishermen are of prime importance.
“We are working with the Government of Sri Lanka for expeditiously securing consular access for these fishermen,”
Bilateral mechanisms are in place to comprehensively address all matters related to fisheries.
It may be recalled that the Fourth meeting of the Secretary-level JWG was held in December 2020 through virtual mode. Follow-up measures on the basis of discussions which took place during the meeting need to be taken forward quickly.

The Supreme Court today refused interim relief in an application filed by President’s Counsel Senaka Walgampaya seeking an Order from the Supreme Court compelling the President to appoint judges to fill the existing vacancies in the Court Of Appeal.
The deadline for online applications to the 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level (A/L) Examination has been extended until July 12, the Department of Examinations said.
