The Indian High Commission today issued a statement regarding the assaults on Sri Lankan fishermen at sea allegedly by Indian personnel.
In the statement they had acknowledged that they had seen media reports of Sri Lankan fishermen assaulted at sea on January 29, 2026.
“ We have ascertained and can confirm that no such assault was inflicted by any Indian Navy or Indian Coast Guard personnel”.
The HC added that India has consistently maintained that a humanitarian approach should be adopted to fishermen’s livelihood concerns and that the use of force should not be resorted to under any circumstance.

The United States has told Sri Lanka that the disposition of the Iranian naval vessel IRIS Bushehr and its crew is a matter for Colombo to resolve under its own laws and international obligations, while signalling it is in active talks with Sri Lanka to contain Iran’s threat to US interests.
The government today granted permission for an Iranian warship with 208 on board to enter the country.
