Indian Police yesterday seized 2090 kilograms of Kerala Ganja that had been destined for Sri Lanka.
Indian media said police had also arrested six suspects in connection with the consignment along with two vehicles.
According to Indian media, following a tip-off, Keerathurai Police had raided a coconut plantation in Pudukulam, Madurai and inspected a container lorry parked at the location.
Those inside the vehicles had told police they were transporting sugar. However, after removing the sacks of sugar, the officers had observed several other suspicious sacks made to look like sacks of sugar. A search of these sacks revealed that they contained 2000 kilograms of Kerala Ganja.
Police arrested six suspects including the lorry driver. Further questioning of the suspects led police to another vehicle where they recovered a further 90 kilgrams of Kerala Ganja hidden inside.
Four of the arrested suspects are Indians while the other two are Sri Lankans, Indian police said.
The suspects had confessed that they had planned to transport the drugs to Danushkodi and to take them via boat to Sri Lanka's northern waters.
The suspects, along with the seized drugs and vehicles are due to be produced in court.
