The Education Ministry states that an inquiry will be held into the incident where an invigilator at a GCE O /Level examination centre in Hidogama allegedly sexually abused a candidate.
The suspect invigilator has been remanded after being arrested and produced in court.
Issuing a statement, the Education Ministry stated that the Education Minister had ordered the Commissioner General of Examinations to immediately launch an inquiry into media reports that an invigilator at an examination in Hidogama had allegedly sexually abused a candidate on May 25 in the guise of helping her with the examination.
A report was called from the Education Director of the North-Central Province over the matter. Accordingly, statements have been recorded from the victim, the Supervisor and Assistant Supervisor of the examination hall, the invigilator against whom the accusation has been made as well as other candidates who were in the examination centre at the time.
Based on this report, the Hidogama police took the suspect invigilator into custody and produced him in court, where he was remanded in custody.
There will also be a departmental inquiry into the incident and disciplinary action taken against the accused invigilator, the ministry stressed.
