Intention of No confidence motion is to expose government: SJB

News

The main intention of the opposition parties led by the  Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) to hand over no confidence motion against the Deputy Minister of Defense  Major General (Retired) Aruna Jayasekara was to expose the government, a senior SJB member said.

The opposition whip as well as SJB member Gayantha Karunathilake told the Times online that they do not expect victory by motioning the no confidence motion, but want to expose the government.

He explained that SJB as well as other opposition parties rallied together to bring the no confidence motion against Deputy Defense Minister Jayasekara, so they could expose actions of the government while they try to defend their deputy minister.

He elaborated that they are aware that they are unable to win the no confidence motion as they are aware that the government is stronger with numbers.

“ We are aware of the number game, but our objective is to expose the government during the debate, We were even aware  that Keheliya Rambukwella would end up victorious of the no confidence brought against him, but we were able to expose him and the ones who supported him”, he said.

The No-Confidence Motion was brought against Deputy Minister Jayasekara citing his involvement in the Easter Sunday attack investigations, and the conflict of interest of being the deputy minister in charge of the ministry investigating the matter.

The deputy Minister was holding the position as the commander of the Security Forces (East) during the incidents which occurred in relation to the Easter Sunday attacks, including Vavunathivu police murders and the  Sainthamaruthu explosion.

The no confidence motion was handed over to the speaker yesterday by the opposition party members.
