Protests over shortage of gas and fuel continued today in several parts of the country despite fresh attempts by the government to restore supplies.
People were waiting in queues from yesterday evening to purchase fuel and gas .
Those gathered and waiting near fuel stations held protests due to delays in obtaining fuel. Similarly, people who were waiting in queues with empty gas cylinders to obtain new ones too were expressing their frustrations and anger through protests.
Vehicle movements along roads which leads to Colombo and other suburbs were disrupted as a result of numerous protests.
Baseline Road was blocked at Orugodawatta by protestors demanding fuel. Another protest was held at the Kirulapona – baseline Road demanding gas.
There were also protests at Hikkaduwa and Waskaduwa on the Galle road demanding gas and fuel respectively. More protests were held in Dewata Junction in Galle demanding gas.
Another protest at Bopitiya, Ja Ela was held over fuel.
Meanwhile, a source at the Petroleum Corporation said that their employees and people too remained in queues at fuel stations held within the Kolonnawa Petroleum storage terminal (CPSTL) ltd. premises. He said that similarly fuel queues of Ceylon Petroleum Corporation staff remained at queues at Sapugaskanda as well as CPSTL premises.
The Litro Gas Company Chairman Vijitha Herath said that 80,000 gas cylinders will be distributed daily from today. He added that 7 million US Dollars would be paid for two gas vessels on Monday.
