Issuing of ‘on-arrival’ driving licenses to foreign tourists begins

News

Foreign tourists arriving at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) can obtain a Sri Lankan driving licence within minutes, following the launch of a new Department of Motor Traffic branch at the Arrivals Terminal.

Launched by Transport Minister Bimal Ratnayake, the service allows tourists to get licences based on their existing permits and visa duration. It also caters to heavy vehicle licence holders and three-wheeler drivers from countries like India.

Applications can be submitted via email to speed up the process. The new facility replaces the time-consuming visits to Werahera and is expected to save tourists valuable travel time. Plans are underway to introduce QR codes and equip traffic officers with smartphones.
