Measures will be taken to introduce a year’s imprisonment with hard labour and to increase the fine for cattle theft up to one million rupees, Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera said.
He said the Ministry has noticed an increase in cattle thefts across the country. Under the Animal Welfare Act, the maximum fine for cattle theft at present is Rs.50,000 and no imprisonment.
He said officials at the Livestock Development Division has been instructed to amend the Animal Welfare Act by including both imprisonment and an increase in fines.
The Minister said the Gampaha district is reporting the highest number of cattle thefts.
