Japan grants Rs2.8 billion for Sri Lanka hospital solar power supply initiative

Sri Lanka’s hospitals power supply is to be stabilised using renewable energy with the Japanese government’s project grant assistance of Rs.2.8 billion, the Finance Ministry announced.

The project is planned to establish photovoltaic solar power generation systems in selected hospitals in Sri Lanka

Under this project, rooftop photovoltaic solar power generation systems will be installed in three selected government hospitals: Sri Jayewardenepura General Hospital, Teaching Hospital Ratnapura, and Teaching Hospital Kurunegala.

In addition, photovoltaic modules and accessories, power conditioners and accessories, power cables and terminals, fire detectors, other related renovations and related services will be provided.

This grant assistance via Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) will be a great assistance for technology transfer in the field of photovoltaic solar power generation systems in Sri Lanka.

Renewable power is booming as innovation that brings down costs and starts to deliver on the promise of a clean energy future.

The non-renewable energy sources, which are rapidly depleting and causing detrimental impacts on the environment by contributing to greenhouse gas emissions has led the Government to consider alternative renewable energy resources

By strengthening this challenging journey, the Government of Japan, as one of the main development partners, by extending its cooperation further, has agreed to provide this grant assistance, ministry sources said.

The Exchange of Notes and the Grant Agreement pertaining to the above grant were signed by the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Economic Stabilization, and National Policies, K.M. Mahinda Siriwardana, on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka on February 14, 2024,

The Ambassador of Japan in Sri Lanka Mizukoshi Hideaki signed the Exchange of Notes on behalf of the Government of Japan and the President, Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), Tanaka Akihiko signed the Grant Agreement on behalf of JICA. (BS)
