Refuting claims of an approaching essential drug shortage, State Minister of Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana said the government is ready to go for immediate purchasing if a shortage occurs.
“There are enough essential drugs to be issued to state hospitals for about three months. If there are signs of a possible shortage in the coming months the Ministry will go for immediate purchases,” the Minister told Timesonline.
The Society of Government Pharmacists has expressed concern over an island-wide shortage of essential medicines both in the government and private sector within the next two weeks’ time.
Its President Ajith Tilakaratne said essential drugs used to treat cancer and kidney patients are low in stock.
