Kayts Magistrate Court released 33 Indian fishermen yesterday after handing them 18 month Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) suspended for five years and three others were further remanded under different charges.
The Indian fishermen were taken into custody by the Navy on March 15 for engaging in bottom trawling in Sri Lankan territorial waters and later handed over authorities for legal action.
Three others including two skippers and another fishermen who was a repeated offender were jailed for six months and one year respectively. So far, eleven Indian fishermen are jailed in courts for engaging in bottom trawling in Sri Lankan territorial waters. (N. Thayalan)

In his special statement, President Ranil Wickremesinghe announced that debt restructuring agreements will postpone all bilateral loan payments to foreign countries until 2028. Additionally, Sri Lanka will have until 2043 to repay these loans on concessional terms.
