Leave of all the staff of the Department of Railway has been cancelled with immediate effect by the Railway General Manager.
This is in accordance with an extraordinary gazette issued by the President on February 27, where train services were made an essential service.
Accordingly, in order to maintain a continuous and efficient service, the General Manager of the Railway Department, W. A. D. S. Gunasinghe, has cancelled leave of staff from March 14 onwards.
Any officer taking leave tomorrow (March 15) should prepare a report containing the reasons to do so and present it to the General Manager. The Railway General Manager has informed staff that any officer who fails to report to work without reasonable cause will face legal action under the Essential Services Act,
The move comes in the wake of Railway unions saying they would go on strike from midnight today.
