MP Gajendrakumar arrested and granted bail

Jaffna district Parliamentarian Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam was arrested at his Queen's Road residence in Colombo today morning, police said. 
 
The MP was arrested under the charges of obstructing police duties after he allegedly harassed police officers near an examination centre in Kilinochchi on June 2.
 
The Leader of Tamil National People's Front was arrested by a team of police officers attached to the Maruthankerny police after he failed to appear before the police station to record a statement. 
 
He was produced in the Kilinochchi Magistrate courts later in the afternoon and was granted a surety bail of Rs 500,000.  
 
His party supporters conducted a silent protest outside the court premises.
 
On Tuesday the Kilinochchi Magistrate  imposed an overseas travel ban on the MP. 
 
A complaint has been lodged over the incident by the MP at the Human Rights Commission as well.
