Jaffna district Parliamentarian S. Shritharan was elected as the new President of Ilankai Thamil Arasu Katchchi (ITAK) today following a secret ballot in Trincomalee.
Mr Shritharan secured 187 votes while his fellow MP M.A. Sumanthiran 137 votes in the election. A total of 330 individuals consisting of the party’s Central Committee and party activists from all Divisional Secretariats in North and Eastern provinces took part in the election process.
This is the first time in its history of nearly 75 years, the oldest Tamil party in the country elected its leader through a ballot.
The newly elected leader will assume duties at the party’s annual convention next Sunday at Trincomalee.
