Mahinda to vacate his official residence today

News

Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is due to vacate his official residence at Wijerama Mawatha, Colombo this morning, a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) source said.

The SLPP source said the former President is scheduled to vacate his residence at about 11.00am today. He will proceed to his private residence at Carlton House in Tangalle.

Mr. Rajapaksa is to vacate the residence following yesterday's passage of the Presidents' Entitlements (Repeal) Bill by Parliament. The Bill was certified into law after Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne endorsed the certification on the Bill last evening.

The new Act strips most of the perks enjoyed by former presidents and their widows, except for the pensions given to former presidents.

Aside from their official residences, the new Act also abolishes monthly allowances paid to former presidents or their widows.

It has also stripped monthly secretarial allowance and official transport and such other facilities provided to a former President or their widow.
