The Presidential elections in Maldives is heading to the second round of voting between two candidates who received the highest number of votes, after any of the eight candidates failed to obtain 50 per cent in the first round.
At Saturday’s elections the incumbent president Mohamed Solih running for his second term obtained only 39 per cent of the vote while his rival Mohamed Muizzu secured 46 per cent of the vote, according to provisional results finalized by the Elections Commission.
The Elections Commission of Maldives is due to make an official announcement on the results later Sunday.
Accordingly, if the second round of vote is confirmed the run-off poll is due to be held on September 30.
The Saturday’s poll witnessed a 75 per cent turnout of the 282,000 registered voters.
