Man illegally possessing sea cow meat arrested

A man who was in  possessing dugong ( sea cow) meat was arrested by the officials of Department of Wildlife yesterday.
 
The arrest was made following a tipoff received  by the Manner Navy officials. 
 
The wildlife officials in charge of the Vavuniya wildlife range and Mannar ranged carried out a raid following the information received and arrested a 64 year old man who was possessing one kilo of dugong meat. The arrest was made at vankale , Anganispuram area.
 
The suspect and the sized meat were produced before Mannar magistrate and was released under Rs 500,000 surety bail. The case is scheduled to be taken up on May 08.
 
The Dugong is a  mammal belonging to the Sirenia family, feeds of sea grass and is found  in northern and northwestern sea of Sri Lanka as well as near the palk strait and the Gulf of Mannar. The sea cows plays a major role in maintaining and nourishing the sea grass ecosystems.
 
The dugong prevents the growth of algae and other plant species that occur in the warm shallow waters of the Indian Ocean, is a protected animal under the Wildlife and Flora Protection Ordinance. These animals are a very rare animal that is facing extinction due to killing for meat, marine pollution, and illegal fishing activities.
