Massive Aloe Vera cultivation project gets underway in Anuradhapura

News

A massive Aloe Vera cultivation project is to be implemented by Aura Lanka Herbals Pvt Ltd on a 102,000 acre land in Rajanganaya Yaya 18 in Anuradhapura District to set up a factory and a plantation to manufacture herbal products mainly for exports.

This huge land has been given to the company on a 30 year-long tem lease under the Dry Zone Rural Economic Development Aloe Vera project considering a project proposal submitted by the company.

The Cabinet of Ministers has given its approval on Monday for the Joint Memorandum submitted by the Ministries of Finance and Land.

Aura Lanka has agreed to make an initial investment amounting to US$300 million to launch the Aloe Vera cultivation in this land and later set up a factory to produce Aloe Vera herbal products including high energy drink, hair oil, medicinal tablets, cosmetics creams and capsular inhalers.

The company has obtained approval letters from the Department of Archaeology office in Anuradhapura, the Divisional Secretariat of Rajanganaya, the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) of the North Central Provincial office in Anuradhapura, and the Land Commissioner (Inter-provincial) office at the District Secretariat in Anuradhapura between the periods of 31 May 2019 and 2 October 2019, according to the proposal.

Environmentalists and residents of the Rajanganaya, Yaya 18 area in Anuradhapura recently raised concerns over the land being allocated for this Aloe Vera plantation project. According to the residents, over 100 acres of land had been cleared.

Environmentalists complained that, there is a huge area of land cleared using heavy machinery within the Wilpattu park buffer zone, for which no clearance was obtained. (BS)
