Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara emphasized the importance of the Anti-Terrorism Bill for Sri Lanka in addressing global terrorist threats, noting that other countries have enacted similar legislation designed to protect human rights.
The Minister made this statement while addressing representatives of 240 organizations and individuals who met him today, May 29, 2025, to present their prepared and signed proposal.
The proposal, which calls for public opinion on repealing the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act and drafting a new law, was handed over to the Ministry of Justice and National Integration this morning.
On this occasion, the Minister stated that the previous government had appointed several committees to draft a new bill to replace the Prevention of Terrorism Act, but no steps had been taken to prepare such a bill.
He said that the current government appointed a new committee for this purpose and made a public request for citizens to submit their views and suggestions, as this government listens to the people. He added that the government will fulfill the promises it made when coming to power.
The Minister further stated that the government is currently preparing a report based on the views and suggestions received regarding the introduction of a new bill. However, he emphasized that the bill is not being drafted to suppress individuals based on race, religion, or any other grounds.
He also noted that such legislation is necessary, as it is the government's responsibility to protect the country.
