The body of a 17-year-old Samanera Monk, who had drowned while bathing in the sea near the Lighthouse at Galle Fort was found last evening (25).
The deceased monk has been identified as Ven. Hegoda Sumansiri, who had been residing at the Subadraramaya Temple in Balagoda, Galle.
The monk had gone with three other monks to bathe in the sea off Galle Fort yesterday after the final day of the Pirivena Examination held in Baddegama.
The area where the monks had bathed, known as 'Sea Bath,' is considered a safe spot for bathing. Police however, said the deceased monk had ventured out of the coral reef in the area, which acts as a natural barrier for the bathing spot. It is believed that he had thereafter been swept out to sea and drowned.
The post-mortem examination was conducted at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital and Galle police are conducting further investigations.
