A motorcyclist was arrested in Pannala, Kuliyaptitya by the area police while attempting to snatch a gold chain from a woman and escape.
He had attempted to steal a gold necklace and pendant worth Rs 240,000 belonging to a woman who is a shopkeeper near the town.
The suspect had stopped by her store and requested a business card f the victim. Upon reaching out to hand it over, the suspect seized the opportunity to grab her necklace by attacking her with chilli powder.
The victim who had been alone when the incident occurred had screamed for help, and run towards the motorcycle, physically attacking the suspect.
Hearing the commotion, an individual had alerted the area police who arrived at the scene and arrested the suspect.
He was Identified as a resident of Narangoda. The 44-year-old was arrested along with the motorcycle on the September 22, and after being produced before the Kuliapitiya Magistrate's Court , he was remanded until the September 26.
Police Constables Maduvantha and Vanniarachchi conducted the raids as per the instructions of Police Station Commander Inspector Wijesuriya.
